Meet Danielle Zamir

Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (CIYT Level 1) and E-RYT 500

From Curiosity to Devotion

Originally from Vancouver, British Columbia, Danielle discovered yoga nearly two decades ago while recovering from an injury—an unexpected beginning to a lifelong practice.

Her first experience with yoga challenged her in ways she had not expected. Entering a Bikram yoga class, she was met with intense heat, unfamiliar postures, and a room full of mirrors that offered no place to hide. As she moved through the sequence, she encountered not only physical discomfort, but also the habitual patterns and reactions of her own mind. Yet something kept drawing her back.

Over time, Danielle discovered that the mind often gave up before the body needed to. With consistent practice, her relationship with discomfort began to change. Rather than reacting immediately or retreating from challenge, she learned to pause, observe, and remain present—discovering a sense of calm and steadiness that extended far beyond the mat.

She was no longer searching for greater flexibility. She was searching for understanding. She became less interested in simply performing the postures and more interested in understanding the practice itself. She carried questions with her: Why did this practice create such a profound shift? How could movement, breath, and attention influence not only the body but also the way she experienced herself? What was happening beneath the physical form?

That curiosity continued to deepen as life took her in new directions.

Before settling in Santa Barbara, Danielle spent several years living and working aboard a sailing yacht, traveling internationally and completing several ocean crossings. With few opportunities to attend classes, she learned to rely on and trust her own practice. In the quiet of early morning, she would rise with the sun to practice while the rest of the boat still slept. Yoga became her anchor—a constant she could return to as the world around her quite literally changed.

Through every transition that followed—from building a life in Santa Barbara to becoming a mother—her practice evolved alongside her. During pregnancy, Danielle was introduced to Iyengar Yoga. After her daughter, Joanna, was born, she delved more deeply into the Iyengar method. Through its systematic approach, the practice began to lead her beyond simply performing the asanas and into a deeper exploration of questions she had carried for years.

The Iyengar method offered Danielle not a fixed set of answers, but a framework for continued inquiry. With each return to the mat, the questions that first drew her to yoga continue to unfold through experience rather than explanation, revealing new connections along the way. This ongoing process of discovery continues to renew her inspiration for both practice and teaching.

First and foremost, Danielle remains a student. She views teaching as an extension of her own practice and an ongoing commitment to learning. She is grateful for the guidance of her teachers, including Senior Iyengar Yoga Teacher Carolyn Belko and Richard McLaughlin, and for the opportunity to study at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune, India.

Danielle brings years of practice and study to her teaching. She seeks to share not only the principles and techniques of Iyengar Yoga, but also the curiosity and spirit of inquiry that continue to shape her own practice.
